An option is a derivative financial instrument that gives the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to acquire or sell an underlying asset (most often shares), at a pre-agreed price (called the exercise price), at a pre-determined future time (expiration of the option). For this purpose, the buyer pays a certain price to the seller of the option in the form of a premium.
